Teens Take on Science

Breaking down big science, one teen-friendly post at a time. Science can be confusing — but it doesn’t have to be. Teens Take on Science simplifies complex medical and biological topics in a way that’s relatable, visual, and actually interesting. From how your heart works to what stress does to your brain, this section explains the “why” behind your body and health — with a teen voice and real-world examples you’ll actually remember. No boring textbooks here — just science that sticks.

DNA

DNA sounds super complicated.  (Deoxyribo...what now?)
But here’s the spoiler upfront: DNA is basically a giant recipe book inside you. And not just any recipe book — it's the one that makes YOU... Well, you.  Your eye color? Your height? The way you can (or cannot) roll your tongue?  Blame the recipe book. Imagine you’re trying to bake a cake.
You need a recipe with instructions:

1. How much sugar?

2. How long to bake it
3. What frosting to use
DNA works the same way, except instead of cake, it’s baking… a whole human being.

Inside every cell of your body, there’s a copy of this master cookbook.
It’s packed with step-by-step instructions called genes — little sections of DNA that each control a specific thing.

How It’s Built: Tiny Twisty Ladders
DNA looks like a twisted ladder, called a double helix.  The sides of the ladder are made of sugar and phosphate molecules (kind of like the spine of a book). The steps are pairs of bases — four chemicals nicknamed A, T, C, and G. A always pairs with T, and C always pairs with G
Quick Recap

DNA = Life’s recipe book, Genes = Individual recipes, Double helix = Twisty ladder vibes, and A-T & C-G = Forever base BFFS.
So next time someone says "it’s in your DNA," you’ll know:
It’s not magic.
It’s science!
